Descriptionthedarkmod.x64 v2.07 crashes on linux whenever you enter the game, if "Maps" was chosen as shadow implementation.
Steps To Reproduce1) Under settings/graphics/advanced choose the option "Maps" as shadow implementation.
2) Load a map e.g. the tutorial
3) The game will crash when the map is loaded and you press the attack key to enter the game.

I have seen this when I emulated almost-no-OpenGL machine.
Back then I thought that it is not critical since Maps is non-default and experimental, and only a few people don't have geometry shaders anyway.

By the way, OpenGL version is enough to support core geometry shader, but driver does not expose the extension (which is a bit different).

1. If you don't check, then GL version >= 3.2 will become required for Maps. Not a problem really.
Note however that geometry shaders with extension and geometry shaders in core are different:

It may happen that the current code either works with the extension or with the core. You can break Maps for many people trying to make it work for one man with weird drivers.

2. I see the following in interaction.fs:
  #extension GL_EXT_gpu_shader4: enable
If you remove it, then usampler2D will become undefined, and the whole shader will stop working (maybe not everywhere, but somewhere surely).
Not something to play with during the last releases of beta phase.


P.S. I think this is yet another case which justifies why moving to full OpenGL 3 is necessary.

I have a feeling that the current geometry shaders actually use the core feature. I guess the extension text should be read more closely to decide that, but I guess it is so. Then OpenGL version must be checked against 3.2 instead of the availability of extension.

I'm pretty sure that removing the extension check won't break anything.

We might want to create a special case patch for cases like this that overrides the interaction.fs in the standard pk4 - @nbohre1more?
I suppose upping the glsl version to 1.30 should do the trick.

Hard to say.

Nightcrawler wrote it had been fixed by hotfix release, which probably means that the original problem was actually caused by this bug:

Speaking of the geometry shaders support question, it is still unclear:
1) The basic GL version for next release is not fixed yet (it still varies from 3.0 to 3.3).
2) GL linking system is being changed right now.
I think the best approach would be to check this issue again before next release and during beta.

Or did you remove geometry shaders completely?
If yes, then we can indeed close this problem.
