Possible related is this crash:

ERROR: Dup model (8 LOD stages) with no surfaces at all.

Should be fixed with revision 0004565:

* If the entity has 0 visible models, do not update the rendermodel, just hide it.
* if there was never a rendermodel before, then allocate one so we can update it w/o crashing.
