DescriptionHaven't fully investigated this, but it appears that certain (all?) spiderwebs light up when lightning is triggered.

The web could be down in a cellar and still light up.

Buck28 reported the same issue this time last year. There was a thread on it, but he had a lot of variables and I don't think anyone actually investigated it.

Bizarre. I have no theories.

The webs flash because of 2 things:

- fx_thunder creates a light with radius 99999 units, enough to take in underground webs.
- web materials are both translucent *and* light-interacting. Translucent surfaces can't receive shadows, so the webs are not shadowed by the surrounding walls and they get lit by the lightning.

A workaround in a map would be to put a closed door or closed func_portal between the outdoors and the web. That'll stop the light making it into the web's visleaf.

I'm not sure whether there's a code fix.

I created a test map (attached) which has nothing more than a collection of webs inside a closed room, which is inside an outdoor area. When the lightning flashed, most of the webs lit up. I looked at the shader differences between the ones that lit and the ones that didn't, and tinkered with the shaders, but couldn't find any consistent reason why the webs lit up or didn't.

After a while, I decided this was some rendering effect, so I gave up and, in my WIP, ripped all the webs out of the building where I had them. The only access to the inside of the building from the outside was a single visportalled door, and it didn't matter whether the door was open or closed; the webs I was using all lit up.

Strange, it works for me as expected in your map. When I noclipped into the central blocked-off room, the lighting wasn't perceptible at all. No sound or light.

When I added a door and VP, I heard the lightning wehether in or out the room. And the webs lit up when the door was open but not when it was closed.

I'll rename it webs2 and attach it.

Yeah, not sure what's going on.

With the door closed, the webs don't light up. This is different behavior than I was seeing in my WIP.

When the door is open, the webs light up even though there's no way the light from the outside could reach them. For this reason alone, I can't keep the webs in my WIP.

You could tweak the material. Make it "blend add" instead of translucent, so it won't react to light, and reduce the rgb setting to dim the webs until they stop glowing.

I haven't thought of any general fix.
