Summary | 0005125: Select Group Parts only selects members that are entity brushes/patches
Description | 'Select Group Parts' should allow the mapper to select individual members of a group. However, the only members I'm able to select are brushes/patches that are entities. Nothing happens if I click on anything else.
Steps To Reproduce | 1) Create a brush and leave it as worldspawn 2) Clone the brush and convert it to func_static (or func_mover etc.) 3) Create a model: stagecoach.lwo 4) Group all 3 items together 5) Activate 'Select Group Parts' and try to select items in the group. The only item that can be selected is the brush-entity, no matter if shift-click/shift-alt-click/shift-drag select is tried.
Additional Information | I find the 'Group' function very useful as a more powerful alternative to 'Convert to func_static' for managing groups of brushes, patches and even other entities, but kept wondering why this button frequently didn't do anything and I had to ungroup everything to get at certain members.

Tested & confirmed in 2.6 and 2.7pre4.
I think the problem here is the naming. This function has been there long before the actual grouping feature was added to DR, and its purpose is indeed what you described: to select parts of a func_* entity, previously often referred to as "func group". It's historically named, so I'd propose renaming that DR feature to something less confusing?
The thing is, it does actually select members of both func_statics and groups, so the name 'Select Group Parts' is fitting with respect to what it does. Only that in the case of the latter it has to be a brush/patch entity, which looks like a bug to me. Is there already another button that's designed for the purpose of selecting group members? |

Not yet, but there's a feature request for selecting members of a group: 0004863
Ah, that's good, then we're all set when it comes to the bugtracker with these 2 issues. Looking forward to such a feature.
Noticing this too and can confirm. This is mostly a hindrance when importing prefabs such as dressers with a lot of parts: You can select the brushes that make up the doors, but cannot select entities such as the key in the drawer or the candle sitting on top: For that you still need to ungroup everything, make your adjustments to those entities, then regroup the entire piece of furniture... very complicated by comparison. |
