Summary | 0002758: Arms detach from body on pause
Description | When pausing the game while an arrow is drawn, the player's arms detach from the camera for as long as the attack key is held down.
Steps To Reproduce | Select any arrow Begin attack Without releasing the attack key, open the pause menu Still holding the attack key, press the pause button again to close the menu Move the player around.
Tags | No tags attached. | ||||
Unable to reproduce: 1) There is no pause menu button other than escape (ESC) to menu 2) Escaping to menu with the weapon held at attack does not produce this issue when returning 3) The closest function we have to pause it g_stopTime and it does not cause the arm to become detached. The only thing even close to this issue in current builds is issue 2509 |

With all due respect, unless this has been fixed in a version that has yet to be released, it's *not* "fixed". See below for a video that I just recorded minutes ago, on the most recent version of TDM. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHLMmA5J3l0 |
This also happens with melee weapons: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bbuM81VASCI The only difference here is that your weapon is permanently locked a backswing and you can't even switch to another item. > There is no pause menu button other than escape (ESC) to menu This is the button I was referring to, yes. Was there any attempt made to reproduce this or was it simply deemed unlikely to be valid? |
Haha! That's pretty funny. greebo apparently was able to reproduce it originally, but he never fixed it. Since then, it got covered over by the sands of time. I reproduced it in the SVN version. I don't know if I can fix it in 2.07, but if not, I'll put it on the 2.08 TODO list. |
Thanks for the video. It took a little fiddling but I can now reproduce this issue as well. |
This still happens in 2.08 but I cannot reproduce the "locked" melee issue. I can release the un-tethered sword-arm and everything returns to normal. Can anyone reproduce the "lock" issue? |
Shall I move this to 2.09?
I have no time to look at this, so please move to 2.09.
Removing myself as "Assigned To" because I doubt I will ever have time to work on it.
Fixed in code rev 10543.
Committed code rev 10546. Cleaned up code. |

It is a bit sad when opening main menu affects gameplay. I would be sad if opening menu sheathes weapon, uncrouches, and do whatever changes to my state. I did some testing, and it seems the other part (force unpress attack button after menu closes) is enough to fix the issue. Maybe remove this weapon sheathing? |
The reason for sheathing is that the player usually presses ESC in a panic to cancel shooting an arrow. "I actually discovered it as I changed some of my default keys, then forgot what the key was to cancel my shot so I pressed escape hoping that would put the arrow down, then I returned from the main menu and noticed this occurs." https://forums.thedarkmod.com/index.php?/topic/20824-public-access-to-development-versions/&do=findComment&comment=490139 If the bow is not sheathed when the bow is drawn back, the player will shoot the arrow after returning from the main menu, which is not desirable or likely intended. They could hold the attack button when closing the main menu to keep the bow drawn back, but then they must remember to do so, and if they were trying to cancel their shot, that won't help them. Also, Thief solves this problem the same way. It sheathes the bow if the bow is drawn back, canceling the shot, when the player presses ESC to go to the main menu. |
Or, the bow. Yes, I shooting is less desirable than anything else. Maybe cancel attack/shot but not remove weapon? |
I did experiment with just lowering the weapon instead, but my efforts weren't successful and so I gave up on that solution. The player presses the sheathe key to cancel shooting an arrow, so at least it is consistent with that behavior. |
Oh, OK. Maybe we don't even have a way to cancel bow shot without sheathing it. Thanks! |
